Today’s card of the day is Dewey Selmon’s rookie card, a 1977 Topps. Selmon was one of nineteen players named last week to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Selmon played noseguard from 1972 to 1975 for the Oklahoma Sooners, and he was a First Team All-American in 1974 and 1975. The Sooners were voted the AP NCAA Division I National Champions both those seasons.
Selmon went on to play six seasons in the NFL: five for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one for the San Diego Chargers. From 1976 to 1980, he and his brother, Lee Roy Selmon, were teammates with the Buccaneers. (See the Gallery’s Teammate Brothers page.) He was named a second-team All-Pro in 1979.
After football, Selmon finished his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma. He was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2010.
Selmon appeared on several other football cards, as well. You can see them all in the Gallery.
Congratulations, Dr. Selmon!
