Today’s card of the day is 1960 Topps CFL card of Paul Cameron. Cameron was among the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame inductees announced on January 8. He played tailback for the UCLA Bruins from 1951 to 1953, and he was named an All-American his senior year. Cameron finished sixth in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1952, and third in 1953. (See the Gallery’s page of cards of Heisman candidates.) UCLA has since retired his number, 34.
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Cameron in the eighth round of the 1954 draft. He played one year in Pittsburgh, starting all twelve games at defensive back. He had seven interceptions and three fumble recoveries on the year, and he finished sixth in voting for the UPI NFL Rookie of the Year.
After serving two years in the Army, Cameron then moved to the CFL and played from 1956 to 1959 for the BC Lions. He played both running back and defensive back for the Lions, and he also handled some of the team’s punting and kick return duties. In both 1957 and 1958, he gained over 1000 yards from scrimmage.
After football, Cameron worked in movies and television. He is now 91, retired, and living in California. You can read a 2022 interview with him here.
Congratulations, Mr. Cameron!
