Happy 70th birthday to Dave Williams! Williams played quarterback for the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders in 1976, then jumped to the NFL and played running for five years with the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. His best season was 1979, when he gained 755 yards from scrimmage for the Bears. He played in one playoff game, a Bears loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1979.
Today’s card of the day is Williams’s 1974 University of Colorado Playing card. It is part of a deck that includes 40 Colorado players, eleven coaches, the athletic director, and two team logos. There are two versions of the deck: one with a black back, and one with a gold back–Colorado’s school colors.
Williams is one of at least fifteen players in the Colorado deck who later played in the NFL. You can see the the full deck in the Gallery.
I know that a lot of people don’t like the playing card sets, but for the most part I’ve always thought that they are pretty neat.
