Today’s vintage football card of the day is a 1960 Topps card of Doug Atkins. Atkins was a defensive end for seventeen seasons in the NFL: two with the Cleveland Browns, twelve with the Chicago Bears, and three with the New Orleans Saints. The Associated Press named him a First- or Second-Team All-Pro seven times, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.
Atkins didn’t wear number 18 for Bears, though, as this card suggests. The image on the card is backward; he actually wore number 81. The card is one of at least five in the 1960 Topps set with a reversed image. You can see the other four, as well as cards from other sets, on the Gallery’s Reversed Images page.
Atkins also appeared on numerous other cards and stamps–and a doubloon! You can see them all in the Gallery.
Classic design. I’ve thought about trying to collect this set multiple times over the years.
