Happy Leap Day! Today’s card of the day is a 1955 Rams Team Issue Photo of Elroy Hirsch. It is one of 38 photos in the set, many of which show the players running, leaping, and diving. You can see the full set of photos in the Gallery, and you can read more about them in my old blog.
Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch played professional football for twelve years: three with the Chicago Rockets of the All-America Football Conference, and nine with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams. His best season was 1951, when he caught 66 passes for 1495 yards and 17 touchdowns–all NFL records at the time. He was named a First-Team All-Pro in 1951 and again in 1953.
Hirsch played in four NFL Championship games, with the Rams winning one of them, in 1951. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
Not surprisingly, Hirsch appeared on a lot of cards. Also not surprisingly, most of them picture him airborne!
