Steve DeBerg, who played quarterback for 17 seasons in the NFL, is celebrating his 70th birthday today. DeBerg played for six teams in his career: the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (twice), Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, and Atlanta Falcons. He played until he was 44 years old, one of only thirteen NFL players to do so.
Today’s card of the day is DeBerg’s 1980 Topps card. This is his second card; I like it far more than his rookie card, a 1979 Topps, which has a muddled image. DeBerg had the NFL’s longest pass completion in 1980, a 93-yard play to Freddie Solomon.
Happy birthday, Mr. DeBerg!
