Happy 80th birthday to Jim Tolbert! Tolbert played defensive back for eleven years in the AFL and NFL: six with the San Diego Chargers, one with the Houston Oilers, three with the St. Louis Cardinals, and one back with the Chargers. He played on two playoff teams: the 1974 and 1975 Cardinals.
Before his pro career, Tolbert starred at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was a two-way player for the Blue Tigers, playing both wide receiver and defensive back. He was inducted into the Lincoln Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
Today’s card of the day is Tolbert’s rookie card, a 1974 Topps. This is Tolbert’s rookie card, though it wasn’t issued until his ninth year as a pro. It is his only regular issue card, but he did appear on a few Chargers and Cardinals team issue photos that I haven’t yet added to the Gallery.
