Rod Sherman, who played wide receiver for seven seasons in the AFL and NFL, passed away on February 6. He was 79. Sherman played four years for the Oakland Raiders and one each for the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Rams. He was a member of the 1967 Raiders team that won the AFL Championship and played the NFL’s Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II.
Today’s card of the day is Sherman’s 1973 Topps card. This is his rookie card, issued in his seventh and final season. (The 1973 Topps football set is far larger than its predecessors, so it contains a lot of players who hadn’t appeared on cards before.) Sherman’s card shows him with the Broncos, but he played for the Rams in 1973.
Sherman’s best year was 1972, when he caught 38 passes for 661 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Broncos.
