Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Today’s card of the day is the 1972 Topps “Super Bowl Game” card. I’m sure the Super Bowl was mentioned on a card before 1972, but this is the first time the game got a card of its own. I guess that makes it the Super Bowl’s rookie card?
It’s funny that Topps labeled the card “Super Bowl Game” instead of “Super Bowl VI” or just “Super Bowl.” Has anyone ever called it the Super Bowl Game? Maybe back in 1972.
The black-and-pink image on the card shows the Cowboys’ Roger Staubach being chased by the Dolphins’ Bill Stanfill, number 84. Staubach didn’t need to pass much, though: Dallas gained 252 yards rushing, scored in every quarter, and controlled the game from beginning to end. Staubach, though he threw for only 119 yards, was named the game’s MVP.
Miami’s 3 points is still a record low for the Super Bowl, though the Los Angeles Rams tied it in Super Bowl LIII. Also, the Dolphins committed zero penalties in the game–a record that will always stand.
The Dolphins fared better the next two years, beating the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII (capping their perfect 17-0 season) and the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII.
That’s a really nice looking card. I had never seen this one before.
