Happy 85th birthday to Tom Gilburg! Gilburg punted and played tackle for the Baltimore Colts from 1961 to 1965. He was a reliable punter: In 232 career tries, he averaged 41.4 yards per punt, and he never had one blocked. After retiring as a player, Gilburg coached college football for 37 seasons. From 1975 to 2002, he was the head coach at Franklin & Marshall College, compiling a record of 160–112–2.
Gilburg’s 1964 Philadelphia card is the toughest card in the set to find in high grades. First, it is one of the single prints in the set (though the price guides don’t show it, the set contains 66 double prints), and second, it was on the left edge of the uncut sheet, and thus susceptible to damage in production. You can see its position on the sheet on the Gallery’s virtual uncut sheet of 1964 Philadelphia cards.
Gilburg also appeared on a 1962 Topps card, his rookie card.
