Happy 90th birthday to Bob Long! Long had an eight-year career in the NFL, playing linebacker for the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, and Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the Lions team that won the 1957 NFL Championship, beating the Cleveland Browns, 59-14. That was the last time the Lions won the NFL title. (See my blog article about the game.)
Today’s card of the day is Long’s 1960 Bell Brand Rams card. It is one of the tough high-numbered cards in the set. (With a couple of exceptions, PSA’s population report shows that cards 19-39 are far scarcer than cards 1-18.) The 1960 Bell Brand cards, which were distributed with Bell Brand potato chips, are among my favorites: they’re sharp, colorful, and exceptionally glossy.
This is Long’s only card; he never appeared on a regular issue card. If you squint, though, you can also find him on a couple of late-1950s Detroit Lions team cards.
You can see the full set of 1960 Bell Brand Rams cards in the Gallery.
Didn’t know they made Rams cards. Their Dodger cards are great, these look similar.
