Today’s card of the day is a 1948 Bowman card of Ted Fritsch. It is one of Fritsch’s rookie cards (the other is a 1948 Leaf) and one of the short prints in the set. (All 1948 Bowmans with numbers divisible by three are short prints. See the Gallery’s virtual uncut sheet of 1948 Bowman cards for details.)
Fritsch played fullback for the Green Bay Packers from 1942 to 1950. His best year was 1946, when he led the NFL with nine rushing touchdowns and was named First-Team All-Pro. Fritsch played in one NFL Championship game, the Packers’ 14-7 win over the New York Giants in 1944. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1973.
Fritsch’s son, Ted Fritsch Jr., also played in the NFL: he was a center for three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and four with the Washington Redskins. You can see the Fritsches, along with lots of other father-son pairs, on the Gallery’s Fathers and Sons page.
