Stanford was ranked #13 before the start of the 1979 season, but the team lost its first game to Tulane, 33-10, and fell out of the rankings for the rest of the season. The Cardinal did tie #1 USC, 21-21, the only blemish on USC's 11-0-1 season. Stanford finished 5-5-1. |

Dowhower was Stanford's head coach for only one season. In 1980 he left to take the offensive coordinator position for the Denver Broncos. (Paul Wiggin succeeded him as head coach at Stanford.) Dowhower was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 1985 and 1986. |
