Dowhower was Stanford's head coach for only one season. In 1980 he left to take the offensive coordinator position for the Denver Broncos. (Paul Wiggin succeeded him as head coach at Stanford.) Dowhower was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 1985 and 1986.
