Today’s card of the day is a 1979 Stanford Playing Card of George Seifert. Seifert was the defensive backs coach at Stanford in 1979, his last year of coaching at the college level. The following year, 1980, he moved to the NFL and served as the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He eventually became the 49ers’ head coach, and he lead the team to wins in Super Bowls XXIV and XXIX. He was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2014.
Seifert is one of nine coaches in the 1979 Stanford deck, and one of four who eventually became head coaches in the NFL. (The others were Rod Dowhower, Jim Fassel, and Ray Handley.) Strangely, the 54-card deck contains only eleven Stanford players. Most of the remaining cards are text-only lists of Stanford schedules, statistical leaders, All-Americans, and the like.
Seifert’s 1979 Stanford card is a pre-rookie card. His first regular issue card–his rookie card–is a 1989 Pro-Set.
