Happy 70th birthday to Clarence Chapman! Chapman had a nine-year pro career as a defensive back and kick returner. He played for the New Orleans Saints, the Cincinnati Bengals, the USFL’s Michigan Panthers, and the Detroit Lions.
Chapman is pictured here on his 1979 Coke Saints card. I love these cards: there are 45 of them, one for nearly every player on the Saints roster. The head-and-shoulders photos, though black-and-white, might be the best I’ve seen on any cards. It’s clear that the photographer took multiple photos of each player and picked the best ones, because nobody has his eyes closed or a goofy expression on his face. I only wish that Coke had distributed similar sets for the other 27 NFL teams.
To my knowledge, this is Chapman’s only appearance on a card. You can see the full set of 1979 Coke Saints cards in the Gallery.
