Today’s card of the day is a 1968 Topps card of Lonnie Wright. Wright played defensive back for the Denver Broncos in 1966 and 1967. Though Wright played basketball, not football, at Colorado State, the Broncos signed him as a free agent, and he started in sixteen games in his two years with the team.
The Cincinnati Bengals acquired Wright from the Broncos in the 1968 AFL Expansion Draft, but he never played for Cincinnati. Nonetheless, he appeared on a Topps card for the Bengals that year. (The card pictures him in his Broncos uniform.)
Immediately after his second season with the Broncos, Wright returned to basketball. He played for the American Basketball Association’s Denver Rockets from 1967 to 1971, and for The Floridians (who split their home games between Miami and Tampa) from 1971 to 1972. He appeared on a 1971-1972 Topps basketball card with The Floridians, which you can see–along with cards of numerous other multi-sport athletes–on the Gallery’s “Cards in Multiple Sports” page.
