Alvin Haymond, who played defensive back and returned kicks for ten seasons in the NFL, passed away on March 13. He was 81. Haymond played for five teams: the Baltimore Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Redskins, and Houston Oilers. He led the league in punt return yardage three times and kickoff return yardage once. Haymond played in Super Bowl VII, which the Redskins lost to the Miami Dolphins, 14-7.
Today’s card of the day is Haymond’s rookie card, one of the 66 double prints in the 1967 Philadelphia set. The price guides don’t recognize the double prints, but you can see them diagrammed on the Gallery’s virtual uncut sheet of 1967 Philadelphia cards.
Haymond also appeared on a 1969 Topps card and on a couple of inserts in 1969 Topps packs. You can see all of his cards in the Gallery.
This was my favorite of the Philadelphia designs.
