Happy 85th birthday to Claude Gibson! Gibson played defensive back and returned kicks for five seasons in the AFL: 1961 and 1962 with the San Diego Chargers and 1963 to 1965 with the Oakland Raiders. He led the league in total punt return yards and average yards per punt return in 1963 and 1964.
After retiring as a player, Gibson coached for 16 years in the AFL and college. He was the head coach at the University of Tulsa from 1970 to 1972, and at Mars Hill (North Carolina) College from 1973 to 1982.
Today’s card of the day is Gibson’s rookie card, a 1964 Topps. He appeared on a couple more Topps cards, as well.
