Happy 90th birthday to Sonny Jurgensen! Jurgensen played quarterback for eighteen seasons in the NFL: 1957 to 1963 with the Philadelphia Eagles and 1964 to 1974 with the Washington Redskins. He led the league four times in pass completions, five times in passing yards, and twice in passing touchdowns. In 1968, he tied the NFL record for longest pass, a 99-yard play to Gerry Allen. That record–unless the league lengthens the field–can never be broken.
Jurgensen played on the 1960 Eagles team that won the 1960 NFL Championship. He made the Pro Bowl five times, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. The Washington Commanders retired his jersey number, 9, in 2022. (See the Gallery’s retired numbers page for the retired numbers of all the NFL teams.)
Today’s card of the day is Jurgensen’s 1961 Topps card. It is an error card; his last name is misspelled “Jurgenson.” (Topps made the mistake again in 1963.) Not surprisingly, he appeared on many more cards, as well.
Great card of my fave QB (alongside the late Roman Gabriel).
