Today’s card of the day, for no particular reason, is a 1961 Topps CFL card of Byron “By” Bailey. Bailey played for the Detroit Lions in 1952, the Green Bay Packers in 1953, and Canada’s BC Lions from 1954 to 1964. He was a member of the Detroit Lions team that won the NFL Championship in 1952, and of the BC Lions team that won the Grey Cup in 1964. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
Bailey was a versatile player: He played fullback for his first eight seasons with the BC Lions, then switched to defensive back for his last three. He also returned kickoffs until late in his career.
Bailey appeared on a few other Topps and Post football cards, as well. You can see all of his cards in the Gallery.
It’s always a bit strange to see CFL cards from this era still being made in b/w. With most cards being in color at this point, I can’t help but wonder how sets like this went over with kids?
