Abner Haynes, a star running back in the American Football League in the 1960s, passed away on July 18. He was 86. Haynes played for the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs from 1960 to 1964, the Denver Broncos in 1965 and 1966, and the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in 1967. He led the AFL with 875 yards rushing in 1960, and with 1622 yards from scrimmage in 1962. Haynes was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Chiefs have retired his jersey number, 28. (See the Gallery’s Retired Numbers page for the retired numbers of all NFL teams.)
Today’s card of the day is Haynes’s scarce 1960 7-Eleven Texans card. He also appeared on cards in major issues every year of his career.
Those cards must be a bit rarer than rare, as there are none currently on eBay, and none that have been sold in the last three months.
