Uncut Sheet of 1960 Topps Football Cards

The Heritage Auctions web site has a picture of an uncut 132-card sheet of 1960 Topps football cards, and below is a virtual version of the sheet. If you hold your cursor above a card, your browser should show you the number of the card and the name of the player. Clicking on a card will bring up the full-sized scan. There are 132 cards in the 1960 Topps set, and all of the cards are on this single sheet.

The toughest card in this set to find in high grade is Alan Ameche, in the upper left corner of the sheet. As I am writing this, PSA has assigned grades of 8 or 9 to only 18 instances of this card. Also, there are no PSA 9's of two cards in the set: the John Unitas card in the bottom right corner, and Lou Michaels, on the right edge.

The last card in the set, the Redskins team card, has a population of 66 PSA 8's, 1 PSA 8.5, and 14 PSA 8's. According to the price guides, in any vintage set, the last card is scarcer than the other cards (and therefore worth more) because it got beat up from being on the bottom of kids' piles of cards. I have seen little evidence that this is assertion is true, though. I find that a card's position on an uncut sheet is a much better predictor of scarcity, because the corners and edges of the sheets tended to get damaged in production.

An odd thing about the 1960 Topps sheet is that the four team cards on the bottom half of the sheet are oriented the opposite way of the eight team cards on the top half. I don't know the reason for this. All of the team cards have a checklist on the back, half of them for the first 66 cards in the set, and half of them for the last 66 cards. There is no correlation, though, between the orientation of the team cards and which checklists they have on the back.

The following table shows how the cards were arranged by number on the sheet. As I said on the 1959 Topps virtual sheet page, the seemingly random ordering might have been to make the distribution of cards in packs appear random.

There is only one rookie card of a hall of fame player in this set: Forrest Gregg. There are a lot of errors in the set, from misspelled names to reverse images to a picture of the wrong Jim Taylor.
