1972 Sunoco Stamps
There are 624 stamps in the base 1972 Sunoco Stamp set: 12 offensive players and 12 defensive players for each of the 26 NFL teams. The stamps, in 9-stamp packets, were free with purchase from Sunoco and DX gas stations. Two albums for the stamps, a 56-page "Saver" album and a 128-page "Deluxe Saver" album, were available via mail order. (The Saver album was $1.25; the Deluxe Saver album was $3.50.) Each album contained a starter set of 144 stamps, but the 144 stamps were the same in every album.
Individual stamps were also available via mail order for 2 cents each. In addition to the 624 original stamps, the mail order form contained 82 update stamps. The update stamps were not available from the gas stations, so they are much scarcer than the originals, and I don't yet have a full set. You can see two examples in one of my blog articles, and you can see a list of all of the update stamps on the PSA web site.
Another accessory I have seen for this set is a "trader wallet," a soft plastic sleeve in which you could keep your stamps. I don't know if the gas stations gave away the wallets, or if the wallets came with the albums. You can see a picture in another of my blog articles.
