1960 Fleer Football Cards
The 1960 Fleer set, 132 cards of American Football League players and coaches, was issued in the first year of the AFL's existence. Many of the players in the set--about a quarter of them--never actually saw playing time. There are no short prints in the set, but some cards are scarce because of where they were on the uncut sheet. See the Gallery's 1960 Fleer virtual uncut sheet for details.
1960 was the first year that the card companies included inserts in packs of football cards. I suspect that Fleer, being new to football cards, was the first to do so, and Topps followed suit. Fleer's inserts in 1960 were AFL team decals and college pennant decals.
Also see my blog article, F is for Fleer, for a description of the 1960 Fleer set.
Rookie cards of Pro Football Hall of Famers in the 1960 Fleer set: Sid Gillman, Ron Mix, Hank Stram. Rookie cards of Heisman Trophy winners in the 1960 Fleer set: Billy Cannon.
