Jones played for the Jets in 1975, and for the CFL's Calgary Stampeders in 1976 and 1977. He was the first Black quarterback to start a game for the Jets. His father was Clinton "Casey" Jones, who played catcher for 16 years for the Memphis Red Sox in baseball's Negro leagues. J.J. Jones died in a house fire in 2009.
