Seventy-four years ago, on October 2, 1950, Bob Shaw of the Chicago Cardinals caught five touchdown passes in a game against the Baltimore Colts. That set an NFL record that still stands. Two players have tied it: Kellen Winslow in 1981, and Jerry Rice in 1990. Shaw’s TD receptions were all thrown by quarterback Jim Hardy.
Shaw played seven years of professional football in the NFL and Canada: 1945 for the Cleveland Rams, 1946 and 1949 for the Los Angeles Rams, 1950 for the Cardinals, 1951 and 1952 for the Calgary Stampeders, and 1953 for the Toronto Argonauts. Boosted by his five-touchdown game, in 1950 he led the NFL with 12 touchdown receptions and was selected for the Pro Bowl.
Prior to his pro career, Shaw was an All-American at Ohio State. Today’s card of the day is his 1979 Ohio State Greats card. As far as I know, he did not appear on a card as a professional.
