Happy 70th birthday to Archie Griffin! Griffin was a three-time All-American at running back for Ohio State University. He won the Heisman Trophy in both 1974 and 1975, and he is still the only player to have won the Heisman twice. (See the Gallery’s page of Heisman candidates.)
Griffin went on to play seven seasons, 1976 to 1982, for the Cincinnati Bengals. His best year statistically was 1979, when he gained 1105 yards from scrimmage. He was a member of the Bengals team that played the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XVI.
Griffin’s younger brother, Ray Griffin, a defensive back, was also an All-American at Ohio State, and he also played for the Bengals. Archie and Ray were teammates with Cincinnati for five years, 1978 to 1982.
Today’s card of the day is Archie Griffin’s rookie card, a 1977 Topps. He also appears on a few other cards in the Gallery.
