Happy 75th birthday to Brian Sipe! Sipe played quarterback for the Cleveland Browns from 1974 to 1983, the USFL’s New Jersey Generals in 1984, and the USFL’s Jacksonville Bulls in 1985. He was voted the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1980, after passing for 4132 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also had the league’s highest passer rating (91.4) in 1980, and he led the league with 28 touchdown passes in 1979.
Sipe played college football at San Diego State. I learned today that he also played in the 1961 Little League World Series. His team, El Cajon, California, won the series.
Today’s card of the day is Sipe’s rookie card, a 1976 Topps. He also appears on several other cards in the Gallery.
