Happy 75th birthday to Charlie Weaver! Weaver played linebacker for eleven seasons in the NFL: 1971 to 1980 for the Detroit Lions, and 1981 for the Lions and Washington Redskins. He played college football at USC.
Strangely, though he started for eight years for the Lions, and though the Lions didn’t have many stars at that time, Weaver never appeared on a regular issue (i.e., Topps) football card. He did appear, however, on a 1976 Fleer Team Action “Detroit Lions: A Tough Defense” card, pictured here. He’s the player on the bottom of the pile, number 59. So this is our card of the day.
Weaver is unnamed on the card, as are all the players on Fleer Team Action cards. That’s unfortunate. Someday, if I get ambitious, maybe I’ll add all the pictured players’ names to the Gallery.
I always like the old football photos where it looks like a defender is trying to physically pull another guys head off.
