Today’s card of the day is a 1973 KFC Washington Huskies card of Glen Bonner. I recently added the 1973 KFC Washington set to the Gallery, and Bonner is one of the handful of players in the set who went on to play professional football. Bonner went undrafted in the 1974 NFL Draft, but the San Diego Chargers signed him as a free agent, and he played for the Chargers in 1974 and 1975. A running back, he gained 706 total yards from scrimmage in his two pro seasons.
Bonner’s card is one of at least thirty-two players in the 1973 KFC set. Beckett lists thirty, but I have seen two (namely Dan Lloyd and Dave Pear) that are not in Beckett, so I suspect there are more. (Beckett also considers a team photo and a coaches photo part of the set, but they’re 8×10 while the cards are 3×4, so I’d say they’re iffy.) At least six players in the set later played professionally, either in the NFL, CFL, WFL, or USFL. Dave Pear had the longest pro career, six seasons with the Baltimore Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Oakland Raiders.
I see some of the KFC cards offered regularly on eBay, but most of them are hard to find, and I have only about half the set. If you see or have others for sale, please let me know.
So how did the 1973 Huskies do? Sadly, just 2-11 overall, and 0-7 in the Pacific-8 Conference.
