Happy 75th birthday to John Riggins! Riggins played running back from 1971 to 1975 for the New York Jets, and from 1976 to 1979 and 1981 to 1985 with the Washington Redskins. (He did not play in 1980 because of a contract dispute.) He played in Super Bowls XVII and XVIII, a win over the Miami Dolphins and a loss to the Los Angeles Raiders.
Riggins was a 1000-yard rusher five times. He led the NFL with 24 rushing touchdowns in 1983, and with 14 in 1984. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
Riggins played college football at the University of Kansas.
Today’s card of the day is Riggins’s rookie card, a 1972 Topps. Not surprisingly, he also appeared on a lot of cards after this one.
