John Brown, who played tackle for ten seasons in the NFL, is celebrating his 85th birthday today! Brown played from 1962 to 1966 for the Cleveland Browns, and from 1967 to 1971 for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member of the Browns team that won the NFL Championship in 1964.
Brown is pictured here, along with Fran O’Brien and Mike Haggerty, on the Tackles card of the 1968 KDKA Steelers set. Though, between them, the trio played 26 seasons in the NFL, none of them ever appeared on a regular issue football card. That’s one reason I’m a fan of regional and team issues like the KDKA set: they usually include some of the unsung players on the team.
Brown appeared by himself on a 1972 Sunoco Stamp, but the image on the stamp is tiny, so I much prefer the KDKA card.
Happy birthday, Mr. Brown!
