Today’s vintage football card of the day is a 1965 Topps CFL card of Dick Thornton. Thornton played from 1961 to 1966 for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and from 1967 to 1972 for the Toronto Argonauts. He was primarily a defensive back, but at times he also served as quarterback, wide receiver, kick returner, and punter.
Thornton was a member of the Blue Bombers teams that won the Grey Cup in 1961 and 1962. He also played in Grey Cup losses in 1965 and 1971.
After twelve years in the CFL, Thornton finished his playing career with the World Football League’s Memphis Southmen in 1974. He was inducted (posthumously) into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2022.
Thornton’s father, also named Dick Thornton, played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1933.
Thornton’s 1965 Topps CFL card is one of 132 in the colorful set. He also appeared on a few other CFL cards, which you can see in the Gallery.
