Today’s card of the day is a 1961 Golden Tulip Chargers card of Volney Peters. Peters played defensive tackle for nine seasons in the NFL and AFL. He moved around a lot, playing for the Chicago Cardinals in 1952 and 1953, the Washington Redskins from 1954 to 1957, the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960, and the Oakland Raiders in 1961.
Peters made the Pro Bowl once, in 1955. He played in one playoff game, the 1960 AFL Championship, which his Chargers lost to the Houston Oilers.
Peters’s 1961 Golden Tulip card is one of 22 in the set. The cards, which were distributed with Golden Tulip potato chips, are smaller than standard-sized cards and printed on thick paper. You can see the whole set in the Gallery.
In addition to his Golden Tulip card, Peters appeared on three other cards with the Chargers in 1961. He didn’t play for the Chargers in 1961, however: the Chargers traded him to the Raiders just before the season started. He also appeared on several 1950s cards–including Jim Podoley’s 1958 Topps card, an error. It is one of 19 cards on the Gallery’s “Mistaken Identities” page.
