Today’s card of the day is a 1956 Topps card of Leon “Mule Train” Heath. It is a short print, like all of the Washington Redskins cards in the set. (See the Gallery’s virtual uncut sheet of 1956 Topps cards for an explanation.)
Heath played running back for the Redskins from 1951 to 1953. As far as I can tell, he did not play professionally after that, so I don’t know why Topps put him on a card in 1956. The card pictures him wearing number 24, which he wore only in 1951, according to his page at pro-football-reference.com.
Heath, who played college football at Oklahoma, finished seventh in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1950. The Redskins chose him with the fourth overall pick in the 1951 NFL Draft. His best season was 1952, when he gained 534 yards from scrimmage.
Heath also appeared on a few early-1950s Bowman cards. You can see all of his cards in the Gallery.
