Today’s card of the day is a 1951 Topps Magic card of Vic Janowicz. Janowicz, a halfback for Ohio State, won the Heisman Trophy as a junior in 1950. (See the Gallery’s page of Heisman Trophy candidates.) The Washington Redskins chose him in the 1952 NFL Draft, but he opted to play baseball instead.
After two seasons with baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates, Janowicz returned to football. He played for the Redskins in 1954 and 1955, but in 1956 he was seriously injured in an auto accident, ending his athletic career.
Janowicz appeared on both baseball cards and football cards, and he is featured on the Gallery’s Cards in Multiple Sports page. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1976.
