Today’s card of the day is a 1935 Diamond Matchbook of Alf Anderson. Anderson is one of twelve University of Georgia players in the set, which otherwise contains only NFL players. Why did the matchbook folks choose to include a few Georgia players? I don’t have a guess.
Anderson played both football and baseball in college. After leaving Georgia, he opted to pursue the latter. After some time in the minor leagues, he played parts of three seasons–1941, 1942, and 1946–for the Pittsburgh Pirates. (In the intervening years, he served in the U.S. Navy.) Anderson eventually appeared on one baseball card, in the 1977 TCMA “The War Years” set. You can see it on the Gallery’s Cards in Multiple Sports page.
Enjoyed the article. Lemme know if you have an extra Ray Richards matchbook. Thank you.
