Today’s card of the day is a 1926 Spalding Champions card of Harold “Brick” Muller. Muller played end for the University of California from 1920 to 1922, and he was named an All-American in 1921 and 1922. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
Muller also starred in track and field. In 1920, he won the silver medal in the high jump at the Antwerp, Belgium, Olympics. (See the Gallery’s page of Olympic athletes who appeared on vintage football cards.)
Muller coached and played one season in the NFL, 1926, with the Los Angeles Buccaneers. The Buccaneers were a traveling team that played all their games on the road. The team did well, finishing with a 6-3-1 record, but folded after a single season.
Muller also appeared on a 1955 Topps All-American card.
Now that’s a card! The design is really great, and seems awfully intricate for 1926.
