Uncut Sheets of 1971 Topps Football Cards
The pictures below show how uncut sheets of 1971 Topps football cards were configured. There are 263 cards in the 1971 Topps set, and they were released in two series of 132. (Card number 106, the second series checklist, was released with both series.) The cards for each series were printed on 264-card sheets like this 1966 Topps baseball card sheet, so each series fit exactly twice on a full sheet.
This diagram shows how one half of the first series sheet was configured, based on a picture of a real half-sheet. Assuming that the full sheet followed the pattern I have seen for other Topps sets, the other half sheet contained the same rows, but the rows might have been ordered differently.
If you hold your cursor above a card, your browser should show you the number of the card and the name of the player. Clicking on a card will bring up the full-sized scan. (A real uncut sheet would not have black lines between the cards--that is an effect of scanning them individually.)
The following table shows how the first series cards were arranged by number on the half sheet above.
The following diagrams show how the two halves of the second series sheet were configured. My friend John pieced these together by studying partial second series sheets (here and here) and miscut cards. He has completed the first half of the sheet, and he has only a few holes to fill in the second half, below.
The missing cards on the second half of the sheet are #151 Jim Otto, #207 Willie Brown, #161 Ernie McMillan, #165 Gene Washington, and #188 Roger Wehrli, all All-Pros with blue and red borders. Each would have appeared in the sixth and seventh rows. In the seventh row they would have been inverted like the other All-Pros in that row.
The following tables show how the second series cards were arranged by number on the half sheets above.
