Vessels played for the Edmonton Eskimos, then with the Western Interprovincial Football Union, in 1953. He won the Canadian Rugby Union's most outstanding player award, the Schenley Award, that season. After serving in the U.S. military, Vessels played the 1956 season with the Baltimore Colts.
